El
Rocío
A small village 15 km from Matalascañas beach. On the edge
of the "marismas" (saltmarshes) and sorrounded by simple
houses, stands the majestic, white-walled ermita de la Virgen del
Rocío. The main reason for the hermitage and village is the
celebration of the Romería del Rocío. A million pilgrims
from all over Spain gather here, many on horseback wearing traditional
costume associated with the pilgrimage, accompanying the ox-drawn
carts of their parochial brotherhoods. The Pilgrimage makes for
an unforgettable occasion full of high spirits and religious devotion.
The
route of the discovery of America
Huelva
is the area which is very closely related to the Discovery of America.
It was from the long-gone docks of the municipality of Palos de
la Frontera that the caravels set sail on 03rd August 1492. It is
also the location of La Rábida Monastery, which is a Gothic-Mudejar
church. Further on is Moguer, which boasts the Monastery of Santa
Clara, perhaps the most outstanding monument of the province in
size and artistic value. Other monuments worthy of mention are the
Convento de San Francisco, the church of Nuestra Señora de
la Granada, with its tower of small balconies reminiscent of the
Giralda in Seville, as well as the Casa-Museo of Juan Ramón
Jiménez (Nobel Prize winner for Literature in 1956).
Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche
This Sierra is a surprising district. White villages crammed with
artistic features, such as well-preserved castles, churches, hermitages,
and even mosques are set in peaceful cool forest landscapes, where
the pines tree competes with the cork oak or the may be enjoyed
in places of unspoilt beauty. Aracena, the capital of the district,
is an imposing town, full of surprises. Its awe-inspiring Templar
Castle, with a 13th Century church within its grounds and, down
below, the amazing "Gruta de las Maravillas", surely the
most romantic of Spain´s great caves with inner lakes, stalactites
and stalagmites which colours will impress you.
From Zufre or Higuera de la Sierra to Aroche or Road, there are
no end of fortresses, such as the well-preserved ones at Cortegana
or Almonaster. There are hermitages which ares the focal point of
a deep devotion to the Virgin Mary, such as Nuestra Señora
de los Angeles in Peña de Arias Montano near Alájar,
a magical place in Andalusia´s geography and the scene of
a great pilgrimage festival on 08th September every year. Aroche´s
most outstanding features are the city walls and the Castle-Bullring.
This is the area that produces the best cured ham in the world (jamón
de Jabugo) and, along with its villages includes many other notable
features.
For those who love trekking on well preserved paths and treks, have
here in Huelva the right place to do it. In the National Park of
the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche you will find more than
700 km of perfectly signed treks that will offer you the chance
to choose between a few hours walk or several days trekking.
Minas
de Riotinto
